About Dover New Hampshire Area
Settled in 1623, Dover is known as New Hampshire's first permanent settlement and is the 7th oldest in the United States. The original settlement centered on fishing and trading industries, but with the harnessing of the Cocheco Falls water power, the economy shifted to an industrial base as lumber and grain mills were built. In the 1800s, cotton mills and shoe manufacturing were introduced and Dover flourished as the country's leading manufacturer of cotton goods. In the mid 1800s, ocean-going schooners moved cargo between Dover and ports all over the world. A great flood swept over the falls in 1896, demoting so much material in the river that Dover's brief period as a seaport was forced to end.
Dover is nestled between the ocean and the mountains, within close proximity of the University of New Hampshire, Pease International Tradeport and about one hour from Boston's Logan Airport.
The recent renovation of the old mills and millyards and the development of Cocheco Riverwalk has given the city a face-lift and rekindled a busy downtown business district.
